If you purchase the wrong ceiling spray your work will be in vain because the popcorn texture will not even come close to matching the existing texture on your ceiling. 

The problem is that over the years dozens of different types and brands of popcorn texture has been manufactured. When trying to match a texture on an existing ceiling this makes it very difficult and the process of trying to match your texture may take several attempts before you find a brand that matches your ceiling.

Once you have purchased your popcorn ceiling texture you need to mix it thoroughly, let it set over night and remix it until it has a very smooth and consistent body. In most cases the texture should be mixed to a thin consistency.

You are now ready to gather the tools you need for the job. A 10" scrapping mud knife, a 6" taping knife and a 12" skimming knife as well as a 12" mud pan. You will need to rent a texture hopper machine and ask how to make adjustments on it at the rental store.

If there is damage to the drywall you will need to purchase a peace of drywall, drywall joint compound and joint tape.

For those that are completely inexperienced you will need to read how to repair drywall. When your drywall has been repaired and your texture has been mixed you are ready to spray your popcorn texture onto your ceiling. Use the machine you rented and follow the operation instructions that the rental agency gave you.

Repairing popcorn textured ceilings is a tough job that should be done by a seasoned professional, however if you are willing to take the time to experiment and do things over a few times you will get results that should be at least satisfactory.
