(1) The first step in repairing a nail that is popping out above the surface of you wall or ceiling is to remove the nail.

(2) Next screw in two drywall screws (1-1/4 inch) one over where the nail was removed and one under it. Put pressure on the Sheetrock to be sure it is up against the stud while installing the new screws. Sink the screws slightly below the surface of the drywall. This can be done with a standard Phillips head screw driver or an electric drill. If using a drill be sure not to sink the screws to deep.

(3) Once the screws are in place be sure there is no loose drywall paper protruding around the screw head. If there is simply brush over it with sandpaper to remove it.

(4) The final steps involves using a small amount of drywall joint compound. Take a 4" to 6" mud knife and spread the first coat of joint compound over the screw head. Keep the area very small (2" in diameter). Use your mud knife to wipe the area completely clean leaving joint compound over the screw head only. Do not leave a build up of compound it is not necessary. This step must be repeated three times letting the joint compound dry thoroughly each coat.

(5) After you complete the steps above the recess over the screw head should be filled and there should be no indention that you can see or feel. There should not be a build up of joint compound around the screw head.

(6) The final step of the nail pop repair is very simple. Take a wet sponge and wipe over where you have spotted the screw heads with joint compound being careful not to wipe off to much. A wet sponge will dissolve the edges on the joint compound and will leave a very smooth finish.

(7) The sponging process replaces sanding. Sanding will not be necessary! If you run your fingers over the repair and it feels smooth then you are finished and the screws will hold firmly for years to come.
